Dell to ship SMB servers with MOM 2005 |

Dell Inc. announced on Tuesday that it will begin shipping PowerEdge servers with Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Workgroup Edition preconfigured, in an effort to combine hardware and software management for small and medium-sized businesses.

The release, at the Microsoft Management Summit in Las Vegas, furthers the systems management partnership between the two companies that was announced last year.
MOM 2005 Workgroup Edition with the Dell Management Pack allows administrators to monitor operating systems, hardware and software through a single console. The $499 MOM Workgroup Edition is aimed at smaller businesses and can be used to manage up to 10 servers.
"We've taken a very complicated subject and topic that enterprise-class customers deal with today and we've simplified it for [SMBs]," said Subo Guha, Dell's director of software product marketing. "There are a lot of other monitoring tools, but we wanted to go where there will be mass adoption."
The move is another step forward for plug-and-play devices that simplify and automate management. In November, Round Rock, Texas-based Dell integrated its OpenManage 4 systems management software with Microsoft's
SMS 2003.
"The big problems with all of IT today have been complexity, interaction and interdependency and managing those," said Rich Ptak, president and consultant at Ptak, Noel & Associates, in Amherst, N.H. "When you have a bunch of powerful resources that have to interact -- and the way they depend and interact and integrate changes over time -- management becomes not a luxury, but an absolute positive necessity."
Integrating hardware and software, he said, allows users to feel comfortable with sophisticated technology without becoming a technological expert. However, he said that while Dell may be the first to integrate with the MOM 2005 Workgroup Edition, it won't be the last OEM to do so.
"I think that kind of packaging of the server and the systems management software bundled together with the Wintel space is unique today, but I don't think it's going to be unique very long," Ptak said.
